Could the Va. Tech massacre have been avoided?

The tragic massacre today has, as of now, claimed an estimated 33 lives. Could this have been avoided or minimized? Quite possibly. In a press conference, at about 8PM, it was made clear that weapons are banned from campus. Obviously the shooter didn't care much about this rule. Unfortunately for all of us, the students in the classrooms where this homicidal maniac went out in his blaze of self-centered evilness followed this rule. What if one of them had been armed? We're not talking about grade school students here. These students are all over 18 years of age. Allowing persons who so desire to carry arms increases safety for not only those who carry weapons, but for all of us who choose not to. If one of those students or faculty had been a proud NRA member and been carrying for protection, who knows how many lives could have been saved. Okay, the massacre probably would not have been avoided entirely. The maniac would have caught people by surprise and certainly would have "succeeded" in killing a few innocent people. But a situation where someone is trying to shoot at so many adults in a society with as much gun know-how as ours should have had someone shoot back. While this lesson might not apply so easily at grade schools, in colleges there should be no anti-weapon laws. Pass "shall-issue" laws for concealed weapons permits. Then people like this nut and the guy in the Salt Lake City mall shooting wouldnt be able to reload and keep on killing. For all of you anti-gun nuts, of the 32 innocent people who died, I put, because I feel generous to you, only 27 of those deaths on your heads. Nice going Va. Tech.
